Stuff About Me

Yesterday I got the idea from one of my favorite blogs to create a picture collage consisting of pictures from flickr that are somehow related to questions I answer about myself. I really like how mine turned out...plus it gives me something to write about today. :-)

(Click to make larger)

Well, I Saw it Coming...

I still haven't had a diagnosis as to just what this pain that I'm having is. However, I have a good idea. I'll be going to the doctor this week to find out for sure in order to appease my parents who are worried.

If it is what I think it is, I know for sure that I brought it upon myself. I've been having intuitive warnings for the past 6 months or so telling me to get it together (stop worrying/stressing, eating stuff I know I shouldn't have been..emotional eating, etc.) otherwise I'd be paying for it real soon. Well here I am paying for it. And it doesn't feel good at all. Ya know, life could be so much better if we just listen the first time around. Thankfully, I know what I need to do, though, so all is well. Back to being 85% + vegan live food eater, back to belly dancing, no more stressing, increase of herbal tea intake, juicing, etc. Life begets life. :-)

This may be another week with little to no updates, but at some point within the next few days I am gonna start on a new dress.

Something else I've gotta start doing is working out a lesson plan for an upcoming styling course that I'll be teaching. I keep putting it off, but soon the first day will be here. I'd like to do something different from last year, but I'm not sure what. It's just like me to wait til the last minute to come up with something. It's gonna be fun, though!

I really don't have any pics to show, but this morning I created a collage of some of my asymmetrical dress that I'll share.

I took those from the boutique a while back and they've just been sitting around in here doing nothing but just being pretty. I also picked up a few other pieces such as this one and this one. They too have just been sitting around. Laziness has overcome me lately, but I might get around to adding them to etsy this week,

Have a lovely day!

peace.

Quick Update to Say...

..as of today I've added a whole bunch of new items to clearance and put a few more on sale. I'm tired of looking at a lot of it in my shop plus I'm feeling cluttered inside and out. When that happens some things just gotta go!

Check it out

I've been out of commission pretty much all week with some curious abdominal pains. Couldn't see doctor yet, but will be making a trip to the emergency room here shortly. (Yeah, I've been putting off going but I think maybe I should.)

Since the post feels naked without a photo, here's me sick in bed yesterday yet still managing to play around with the camera...

Will be back with new items/new post/new something soon. :-)

peace.

"Up.side Down..."

"...in.side out and round 'n round."

(^^Theme song for a dress I just finished up. :-D)

So a couple weeks ago I got a request for a reversible version of my "stepping razor hoodie dress." Despite really liking the technique, never have I created anything reversible. Whenever doing something for the first time, I still get very anxious and intimidated. Thankfully, though, I always come through in the end.

I let the person who it's for know from the beginning that this is something I've never done, but she put me to the challenge anyway. I appreciate that. In actuality it wasn't a challenge at all, and I should have known it really wouldn't be. It was just a matter of having no exposed seams and making sure there's no bulk from one side coming through on the other whenever it's worn either way. Gotta have smooothness, and I learned that that can be tricky when working with knits.

I am so pleased with this outcome and so is she...well at least judging from the photos. ha ha! Hopefully the response will be just as great when she receives it. *crosses fingers.*

*Wipes Dust off Sewing Machine*

Just like the week before, last week was also a blur. I had a lot going on, was tired, excessively hot, and might have had a slight bout with depression for a day or so. Consequently, my sewing machine went untouched for 5 days. But yesterday I got back in there and finished up a dress that I started over a month ago.

I really love it, too. :-D

Now, because my brain was kind of foggy while working on it, I ended up using pencil to outline the painted bands instead of the tailor's chalk that I'd intended to use. After a washing much of it came off, but there are still pencil marks, most noticeable around the yellow.

It's not a big distraction, but I'm still gonna list the dress for about 9% less than I normally would ($60 instead of $66).

So that's pretty much all I've had going on lately in the sewing department. I'm working on a couple custom orders right now, and I'll see what else I can produce this week.

Made to Order

So last week was pretty much a blur, but I do know that I worked on 3 custom orders and started on a new dress for the shop. In addition to all the sewing, I also had to deal with car drama. Thanks to the help of my guy, his brother, and his mother as well as an "around the way mechanic," I was able to resolve the issue within 24 hrs. and get my car back in working order.

I had intended to finish another painted dress for today but, while working on it this morning, got a little frustrated towards the end and figured I'd better just give it a rest for a while. So maybe sometime this week I'll finish that up.

In the meantime, here are shots of the custom pieces.

"Veggie Luvah" purchased as a birthday gift for someone in London. Funny thing about this one is that I'd unintentionally thrown away my stencil and realized that I hadn't saved the image on my computer. So I ended up having to put paper up to the computer screen, trace the cabbage image from an up close shot of another one of these that I'd made, and cut the stencil out. It took a lot, but it got done. (And that's not the first time I've gone the route of paper to screen to get a stencil.) Oh, and I'll be adding the listing for this dress back to my shop soon for anyone interested.

Modified "Tisa Dress" ordered by someone who is an absolute pleasure to work with. (And I say "modified" because the skirt isn't gathered.)

And finally, this is a custom made t-shirt for a spoken word artist friend of mine. The front says, "Hip hop ain't dead...." The back says, "...it lives in me." "Unspoken" (her stage name), "Get Soul Productions" (her business).

At first I was gonna stencil all those words but decided against that (Too many words to be cutting out with an exacto knife. I would have gotten tired in the process and the results would have been not so good.) Then I was gonna use iron on transfers, which is what she suggested. Since I wasn't feeling that, I just painted it all freestyle by hand. I think it turned out pretty spiffy.

So yeah. Those three pieces pretty much occupied my time last week. I really don't feel like doing anymore sewing today, so I think I'm gonna go lallygag around.

Uhhhhh....

...anybody know how to change an alternator????? I sure do wish I did.

So my car died on me last night for the first time in the nearly eight yrs. that I've had it. I was on my way to the store when all the lights started going dim, the radio started going in and out, warning lights were popping on all over the place, etc. I was told on Wednesday that I need a new alternator after my battery light kept coming on and off. But I didn't think it'd give in this soon. Ironically, just before going to the store last night and before all this occurred, I was researching cars on the internet, cause I know it's about time to get another one. (I can't even express how badly I don't want to start paying a car note.)

I really like this , but if it's up to my dad who's likely going to be helping me get a car, it's gonna be this. It's cool but not really me. But then again, can a car really be you??? Hey whatever. I just need to get around.

At this point I'm so over the whole car/gas thing that I'm tempted to get one of these . Or better yet, just use these more. There's so much stuff I have to haul around, though, that an actual vehicle is more practical.

The thing about sewing and using my hands so much is that it's made me want to do any and all hands-on activities myself. I was all outside under the hood trying to figure out what was what, knowing I had no clue, ha! But I've always had that DIY ( or DIM?)mentality when it comes to anything. I get it from my mama.

So tomorrow I'll be back on track with a more relevant post. Just wanted to share situation. I'm now off to exchange dinero for metal parts.

4 Seconds of Internet Video Fame

I was just at lafayettegrinder.com trying to see the exact date for the next art expo (I'm always last minute preparing for them) and realized that there's a short video detailing what it's all about. My friend Kody, one of the organizers, gives the run down.

The funny thing is that I'm on there for a split second doing a sassy lil walk and turn while modeling one of my dresses. *blush*. (Edited to say: you can read here about my participation in the last grinder)
