Spark

Just finished up a custom dress for someone...

which was based off of this one custom made for someone else last year...

which was based off of an original design of mine created as part of a small collection a couple yrs. ago:

(and that's now with its happy owner somewhere between Paris and Switzerland :-D )

The other pieces from that collection can be seen here and here.

Many times others have the ideas. I just bring 'em to life.

In all my recent fogginess and attempts to pull myself together over here, I've neglected to acknowledge some recent (and not so recent :-/) blog awards that were passed on to me from 4 wonderful people.

First there was the proximity award given by Needles, Fabric and Thread.

Then there was the sisterhood award from my fellow seamstress SewUpTight.

Next, my blogger friend Jasmina all the way in Slovenia (didn't know I could rhyme, did ya??) gave me this lovely award:

And finally, non other than the talented and inspirational Brooke over at Jewelry RockStar gave me the inspiring blogger award:

Thank you all so very much. I appreciate you collectively and individualy for so many reasons. :-)

It's storming, and I've never been too fond of lightning. So, before I run off to hide under the covers, here's the gift of music: Herbie Hancock and Norah Jones with a Joni Mitchell rendition.

Disappearing Act

Well, turns out that I like these little minis as dresses.

I think they're quite spiffy. :-)

On another note, in a former life I must have been a midwife or something of that nature, because I have a major fascination with the process of conception and birth. I've got books on it. Love to watch films about it. Love to hear stories about it. Everything. I've never been pregnant or had a child, but I am so moved by just the thought of it all.

Has anyone else seen this film? I first saw it around this time last year when there was a screening at the local university and saw it again recently when I found a copy at the library. It's pretty compelling. To me anyway. You can check out the trailer on their site:

I know my presence on the blog has been a bit minimal as of late. Last week I was hit with an astounding revelation: I've outgrown and am not pleased with my current situation/environment/existence, and therefore it all needs to be changed. Lately I've been figuring out how I'm gonna go about doing that. And it's gotta be done soon, cause it feels like I'll burst into pieces if it doesn't.

Delightful

There was a large piece of material left over from this dress. Not really enough for another dress. I wasn't interested in making a skirt at the time. So, a tunic.

Despite how snug it appears on me, it's actually 40 inches around the bust (I'm 34 inches.) I had 3 pins in the back holding it up.

********************

Is it just me or has anybody else been extremely sleepy lately? I mean, every single day so far this week all day long I've been struggling just to stay awake. I'm not sure if it's related to the recent time change or what, but it only hit me on Monday. If that's what it is, never has a time change affected me like this. During the above photo shoot, I had to take about 5 minutes and just lay on the bed. (Cause yeah, my bedroom doubles as my photo shoot room.) I literally felt like I was about to pass out. I think I'll be calling it a night pretty soon.

********************

Soothing music for the tired soul.

I've been craving Maxwell's music so much lately. Well, the "old Maxwell" anyway...before the hiatus and haircut. I'm not sure what his new music will be like, though it's good to know he'll be back on the scene.

Blowin' In The Wind

Dress!

Made from material left over from the dress shown in this post.

I've also made my first tunic of the season:

Has slits on the sides.
Previous versions can be seen here, here , and here.

**********

I was out yesterday in beautiful nature and snapped a few shots.

The shape of this tree reminds me of side ponytails.

I wore a mean side ponytail as a youngster. If my hair were long enough now, I'd do it again. There was something so sassy about them to me. The closest I can get at the moment is the hair do you see above....twists pinned up in back and on one side. Guess my head kinda looks like that tree.

And speaking of styles from former years:

A shot I clandestinely took while in the park supposedly reading Tom Jones for my British Lit. class. I don't formally keep up with what's "in", so I was a bit caught off guard when I saw a lady in stirrup pants. I mean, I know the 80s are back, but this was my first sighting of stirrup pants in a long, long time. Maybe I should call my mom and let her know. She was the queen of those.

Theme: Wind

Although it was very windy while I was out yesterday, I didn't get any windy shots. I'd forgotten what the theme was for this week. So instead of a picture of my own, here's a wind related scene from American Beauty that really resonated with me when I first saw it years ago.

Kəmɪŋ əp ʃɔrt

Um..this halter [dress] was supposed to be a bit longer:

...so now I'm guessing it'd be better described as a top. I know there are brave ones out there who'll wear it as it was originally intended. All I can say is when the wind gets to blowing, look out!

***************

Soon I'll be sending some like this along with various other pieces to Darla's Closet in California. I've been selling there since September and have, thankfully, been doing very well. Hopefully I'll be making a trip to the shop!

See the collection of garments to the left in this photo...with the orange shirt at the back?

Those are all my lil babies. So good to see them out in the world. *tear* :-)

And y'all have gotta check out a fabulous looking model rockin' one of my dresses.

>>>>>>>CLICK HERE<<<<<<<

I'm so used to seeing me (and I'm sure you are, too) in my garments cause, well....it's convenient. It always thrills me, though, when I see others modeling/wearing my threads. :-)

***************

As for now...
I'm off to delve further into the world of phonetics. I'm going for another 'A' on next Wednesday night's linguistics test. The title of this post is practice in the area of transcription.

Do you know what it says?????

I'll tell you after I say:
peace!

Answer: "Coming up short"

Assuming I did it correctly!

It's No Secret

Made this last weekend but just got around to photographing it today.

Olive green with top lined in purple

***************
Saturday I was out all morning searching for another (used) dresser of a particular size and height for my bedroom. Tired, hungry, and dresser-less, I finally gave up and headed home thinking, "No worries. I know I'll find one soon."

Pulled up to the house, and what did I see?

The above dresser sitting outside my neighbor's house waiting to be picked up as trash. The exact height and size for what I was needing. I went over to her to inquire further and found out that it's perfectly functional and that she was preparing to move and didn't need it anymore. It now occupies a spot in my room. Free of charge. :-D

I got an idea for a decoupaged dresser from one of my favorite blogs, Soul Pretty. Perhaps I'll try something like that on the top and fronts of the drawers...

***************

Just some films I checked out from the library to watch as I sew.

And according to the comments on youtube, I'm not the only one who got teary eyed on this part of Juno. Baby kicking correlating with heart pounding due to love--too much for me and my emotions. :-) I've mentioned before that American Beauty is one of my favorite movies to watch. Most of the others are ones I've heard about and decided to check out.

"Post a picture that coincides literally or figuratively with a song title or lyrics."

Kanye West in action.

"I'm better than the rest. Check out the way I dress.
And got a lot of money to spend.
The best club in town is where I get down.
You're lucky if I choose you, my friend.
Walk the greatest walk,
I got to be the talk.
I got the greatest show in town."--Marvin Gaye, "Ego Trippin' Out" (This is only one of the 2 versions I've heard.)

Considering that I often hear the word egotistical used to describe Kanye, I thought the above picture was perfect for this song. Not saying he is or isn't or if that's good or bad. Just matching picture to song here. ;-)
